The basic sciences are the building blocks for applied science and technology — and training schools for the PhD-level researchers required for a knowledge-intense, innovation-driven economy. The SA Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) has commissioned a scientometric study by the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) at Stellenbosch University to determine the state of basic sciences in South Africa. The analysis was completed and published in 2019, and gives a critical insight into strengths and weaknesses within the South African basic science enterprise, enabling the development of policies and interventions aimed at optimising the contribution of basic sciences in SA to our national needs and opportunities.
